This book is an excellent resource for all who want to understand the requirements of and necessity for restoring biblical church leadership in the local church. The purpose of the book, as stated by the author, is “to define, as accurately as possible from Scripture, what biblical eldership is.” The first five chapters are devoted to the five main qualities which are vital to biblical church leadership. The remaining eight chapters unfold an exposition of biblical texts addressing the doctrine of eldership. To deeply understand the character, work, and responsibilities of an elder and what it means “to shepherd the flock that is among you’ (1 Peter 5:2) this book is invaluable.
 

Known as the “Prince of Preachers” Spurgeon marked his generation and the following ones by his tremendous giftedness in expositing the Word of God with clarity, appeal and eloquence. With a genuine and passionate heart, he started preaching in churches of the countryside during his teen years. At age 19 he was called to New Park Street Chapel in London where he served for 38 years until his death. His preaching drew thousands Sunday upon Sunday. It is believed that Spurgeon spoke the Word to around 10 million people during his lifetime. But as French poet LaFontaine wrote, “No flowered path leads to glory.” Spurgeon’s autobiography describes such a path, of faithfulness in trials, constant perseverance, and a passion and desperation for God’s glory.

This book is used as the main text for the Women’s discipleship Ministry at PBC.  It is also an excellent resource for men. The author originally crafted a mission statement for his family. He wanted to write a book that would give his three daughters the “information they need about the Christian life to insure that their family can indeed be a ‘living advertisement’ of Christlikeness.”  But this book is not only for the author’s family. It is one of the most practical books for helping any believer have a greater passion for God and a better understanding on the biblical process of change called sanctification. A workbook (youth edition and adult edition) is also available to be used in conjunction with the book if desired.
